Osteoarthritis (aka Degenerative Joint Disease or DJD) is common among dogs of many breeds. As our furry friends get older, DJD tends to worsen. And at its worst, it can prevent your dog from standing, walking, running, and jumping without discomfort or pain. In other words, arthritis can make your dog’s life pretty miserable.
Is there anything you can do to make life a little more tolerable for your pooch? Traditionally, vets will prescribe medicine to alleviate pain. These medication are usually effective, but they can be expensive and come with other side effects.
So what about alternative remedies, like CBD for dog arthritis? Recent research suggests natural supplements like CBD can be effective. Let’s look at some details so you can decide if CBD is an option for your dog.
Signs of Dog Arthritis
Dogs experiencing arthritis will display certain symptoms, such as:
- Stiffness or difficulty standing
- Lack of energy
- Hesitation in going on walks
- Hesitation in jumping, getting into a car, or onto a bed/couch
- Hesitation in running, playing with toys, or chasing balls
- Weight gain
- Irritability or changes in behavior
- Pain or yelping when petted or touched
- Difficulty going to the bathroom
- Having accidents in the house, caused by hesitation in going outside
- Muscle loss in the limbs or spine
Additionally, there are some risk factors to look out for. These suggest your dog may be at risk for developing arthritis:
- Large & giant dog breeds, such as Labs, Retrievers, German Shepherds
- Injuries to bones, tendons, or ligaments
- Joint infections, such as Lyme Disease
- Poor nutrition
You’ll likely notice your pup slowing down or becoming less active. These are signs of pain that prevent your dog from engaging in regular activity.
What Can I Give My Dog?
Your vet may prescribe medication to dogs with arthritis, although there are also many supplements that can aid in reducing pain and improving joint function.
Its common for vets too recommend aspirin to dogs with mild arthritis, although many vets do not recommend this long-term. aspirin can cause other issues if used too often.
Vets may prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for more serious cases. These are more potent medications that are specifically made for dogs. Some common dog arthritis medications include:
- Carprofen, such as Novox or Rimadyl
- Deracoxib, such as Deramaxx
- Firocoxib, such as Previcox
- Meloxicam, such as Metacam
These medications can provide relief for your dog, but also can have side effects, which is why some people try natural supplements.
Arthritis Supplements & Natural Remedies
Two of the most common natural supplements for dog arthritis are glucosamine and chondroitin.
Glucosamine is said to support cartilage health, which could help repair damage in your dog’s joints and hips. This natural supplement can work, but it’s better to give to your dog throughout its life to prevent degeneration, rather than after your dog develops issues. And while glucosamine could help repair damage, it does nothing to directly ease pain your dog is already experiencing.
Chondroitin similarly can support cartilage and joint health. While not as popular as glucosamine, when used together could increase the chances of improvement. And while chondroitin could be beneficial, it does require higher doses and can lead to non-threatening side effects, such as vomiting or diarrhea.
CBD for Dog Arthritis
Scientist are currently undergoing extensive research into CBD, for humans and animals. While much more research is needed, there have been some studies showing significant promise.
One recent study conducted by Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX released concluded that CBD does in fact improves arthritis symptoms in dogs. See the research findings here >>>
The research discovered that CBD significantly improved quality of life in dogs with arthritis. In addition to reducing pain, CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce arthritic inflammation. During the 4-week study, 90% of dogs showed improvement, which is statistically significant.
These findings are promising, both to researchers and pet owners since CBD is non-addictive, cheap, and effective.
