How These Athletes Are Using CBD
In our previous post, we looked at how CBD may help athletes keep fit (both mentally and physically). But are there athletes who are already using CBD?
At 19 years, Ryan VandenBussche was already playing professional hockey, first in the minor leagues, and finally ending up in the NHL.
To many, Ryan is an epitome of success, but what most people didn’t know was that the badge of honor came with a price; almost 20 years of big collisions, bare-knuckle brawls, and battles for loose pucks resulted in surgeries, broken bones, etc.
While he got treatment for these injuries, the pain became part of his life.
Talking to MensHealth.com, Ryan narrates how for years, as athletes, they were treated with opiates by their team doctors to manage their physical discomforts.
He says, looking back, he wonders how he’s still alive after all the years of using all types of pharmaceutical painkillers and anti-anxiety pills.
Ryan is one of the many current and former pro athletes who have discovered the power of CBD and decided to use it instead of conventional medications.
He has become an advocate for CBD and teaches others what it can and can’t do for them.
It’s this desire to help others get access to the healing properties of the hemp plant that inspired his idea to purchase a 64-acre farm, which he plans to grow medical cannabis to help other athletes like him.
But Ryan is not alone.
In this article, we will mention some of the top athletes who have decided to use more natural options such as the use of CBD to not only manage their pain and anxiety but also boost their recovery.
Other Athletes Who Use CBD Oil
Gabby Douglas- Olympic Gymnast
Gabby Douglass is one of the people behind MotiveCBD- a line of CBD products designed to help athletes recover, train, and perform better.
You might have seen her on your TV screens as the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history to become the Individual All-Around Champion. She’s also the first US gymnast to win gold in both the team and individual all-around competitions at the same Olympic Games.
She uses CBD to manage pain and states that her experience using the compound has led her to believe that her life would have been much easier and pain-free throughout her career had CBD been allowed.
‘‘I am glad that athletes across all Olympic sports will now have the opportunity to use these products and hopefully experience their benefits,’’ She said.
Lolo Jones- Olympian Athlete In Track And Field And Bobsled
Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones is one of the latest athletes to jump on the CBD bandwagon.
‘‘I have always worked hard to take care of my body and be in the best shape possible. I have integrated CBD products into my daily routine, noticed the change in my recovery speed, and am proud to partner with them to educate others about my experience’’, Lolo Jones said as she announced her partnership with cbdMD, a top CBD company.
She explains the need to partner with high-quality CBD companies to minimize the risk of failing a drug test with THC.
According to her, CBD can be an excellent natural remedy for inflammation and pain.
Eugene Monroe- Former NFL Offensive Tackle
Eugene Monroe, a former Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle in the NFL, is another athlete using CBD to manage various body conditions.
Although he retired from the NFL in 2016, Monroe still experiences the pain as a result of the hits he took throughout his career, especially from a concussion he suffered in 2015.
He’s the first NFL player to share that he uses cannabis publicly.
He’s also a part of the ‘When The Bright Lights Fade’ campaign pushing for CBD research and calling for the NFL to put an end to the overuse of addictive opioids, exclude cannabis from its list of banned substances and put more cash to the research on cannabis.
Having used CBD in many ways, including topicals, Monroe believes that CBD is a better alternative to pharmaceutical pain-relieving pills.
Yair Rodriguez– UFC Fighter
Yair Rodriguez, a UFC fighter, is another athlete who has come out on his use of CBD oil to help boost recovery time between training sessions.
The champion fighter who won the featherweight fight on the television show ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America,’’ claims that Cannabidiol has helped him recover faster after tough workout and training sessions. He adds that CBD has also helped him get relaxing rest and sleep at night.
David Ahrens- Retired NFL Linebacker
Now in his 60’s, David Ahrens says that in his 10-year playing career (from 1981 to 1990), he used more pain-relieving pills that most people will ever use in their lifetime.
‘‘All the doctors ever gave us was codeine, Tylenol-Codeine No.3, and other stuff,’’ he said.
He says that pain-relieving pills were given out like candy- with little to no regard for the player’s health, only your performance.
Like most other athletes, Ahrens discovered CBD after hearing about it from different people.
He now uses it to manage various body conditions such as pain and claims that he no longer required pain medications as before.
He states that unlike most pharmaceutical drugs, CBD has no known severe side effects.
Another UFC fighter who believes in the power of CBD.
Nate Diaz came into the light after he publicly vaped CBD oil during a news conference after losing to Connor McGregor.
When asked what he was vaping, he said he was inhaling CBD oil to help with inflammation. He stated that he has been using the compound before and after fights and training sessions.
Why Do Athletes Use CBD?
There are many reasons why athletes would want to use CBD, including:
- To promote calmness and relaxation– CBD is said to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a system responsible for maintaining homeostasis.
Research indicates that by interacting with the system, CBD may help manage mood imbalance symptoms such as stress and anxiety.
Most athletes have reported using CBD to alleviate anxiety or stress associated with workouts or sports.
- Pain management– Sore muscles and joints can hold you from your training regimens. Luckily, CBD has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties that may help you get back to your workout or training routine.
Best CBD Oil For Athletes
The best form of CBD for you will depend on what you’re trying to relieve as well as your personal preference and taste.
For instance, some people may prefer to massage CBD creams into aching joints and muscles. Try our potent CBD lotion with DMSO for maximum relief.

Whatever form of CBD that you choose, it’s advisable that you go for 100% THC-free products, especially if you have a sport coming up and have to pass a drug test.

As an athlete, you must remain fit, healthy, and competitive.
All these come at a cost; anxiety, stress, pain, and injuries are inevitable.
